Postmaster letters and certificates from the Post Office Department from 1900. Mary W. Duncan was sworn in as a Postmaster in Colorado in 1900, and an interesting footnote is that she was a woman in a position of authority in 1900! She may have gotten married or remarried, because later correspondence shows her last name as Mary W. D. Perkins. There seems to be a 1 day discrepancy (March 21st or 22nd, 1900) as to when she started as Postmaster and the Government wanted it to been “cleared up”? That letter is dated May 16th, 1900.
She kept the three documents in what I believe is an unrelated envelope, post marked Feb 20 4:30 PM 1935. It has no return address and is marked with pencil “Post Office Papers”. Also note the 2 cent postage stamp. Her address in Denver no longer exists, I checked on google maps, it is a apartment building. Cool piece of Colorado and women’s history. Might be a nice gift framed for a female high school or college graduate. Or just add to your collection of turn of the century documents. Please call if you have any questions. Thanks!
