This is a Colt Model 1877 “Thunderer”. The Model 1877 was Colts first successful attempt at making a double action revolver. They could be bought nickel-plated or blued and came in a variety of barrel lengths from 2.5-7.5 inches. Nicknames for models changed based on what cartridge they fired, the “Thunderer” was chambered in 41 Long Colt, the “Lightening” in 38 Long Colt, and the “Rainmaker” in 32 Long Colt. Model 1877 revolvers had delicate and intricate mechanisms that sometimes failed, garnering a negative reputation, nicknamed “the gunsmiths favorite”. Despite this, it was known to be used by famous figures such as Billy the Kid and Doc Holliday.

The 1877 for auction here is a “Thunderer” chambered in 41 Long Colt. The phrase “COLT DAA” is stamped on the barrel. A marking reading “20” can be seen on the metal part of the grips. The dates “SEPT 19 1871” & “JAN 19''75” are stamped onto the frame. Based on the serial number (#21563) we believe this revolver was manufactured between 1880-1881. Revolver shows a great deal of corrosion and surface damage to the nickel finish. Hammer won't go all the way back and the cylinder won't rotate.
