He was encouraged by his grandfather, Charles Simmons, who was a prominent Nebraska artist and historian. P.G. was recognized for his artistic talent at a young age. This was one of his last paintings and was done while he was living in Almont Colorado in the Gunnison Valley.
The work really has a an interesting subject matter, it shows an American Indian spirit and ill buffalo in winter. One wonders whether the American Indian spirit is welcoming the buffalo - or - the end of an era for the American Indian spirit and the buffalo - or something else entirely. Art is meant to be interpreted by the viewer, so you get to decide!
