Model 1840 Artilery Sabre (NCO?) heavily used , Battle damage?
Model 1840 Light Artillery Sword, NCO or Enlisted version.
Sword has No leather grip left at all, and is more in the shape of a saber. It is stamped on the ricasso –
U.S.
J.H.
”1”861
Maybe 1861. The blade is so rusted and dark it is hard to tell, so this is my best guess. U.S. is correct, J.H. was the inspector and is found on a number of 1840s made by Ames. There is Nothing left of leather or brass wire of the grip except for the wood, which is in poor shape. There is a tiny “ADL” or “ADE” stamped on the edge of the Pommel.
Note, this looks like it was a combat sword/sabre with numerous cuts and tiny chips in the blade edge. There is no embellishment on the blade or hilt, it is as simple and battle ready as they come. There are very faint stampings that are difficult to read, I did my best. Note, most of these were made by Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee Mass. Truely a unique fighting sword Sabre, I really believe this side was carried in battle. Please look at the photos, thanks!
