They were mostly issued by Ohio Calvary units. These were thought to be well received by the troops in the US Army. There were delays in manufacturing by Joslyn‘s company, causing issues with both supply and quality control of the carbines, causing great litigation with the US government during and after the Civil War. Even so, the US government purchased over 3000 components to make rifles for infantryman and then decided to use the trap door style of breech-loading, at which point production was stopped.
What was left of these Rilfes/Carbines we’re converted to .50–70 government and sold to France for the Franco Prussian War. A large number we’re captured by the Prussians and eventually converted to shotguns and sent to Africa or sold locally in Europe.
This example is matching and in relatively nice shape for a gun that was carried and used in the American Civil War, then taken home unaltered. Note this is very reasonable price for a firearm of this era.
