The entry of the USA into WWII saw its armed forces swell with volunteers in need of clothing, feeding, and most importantly, training. Training with full power rifle could be expensive during wartime and develop unnecessary “flinch” and bad shooting habits amongst new recruits. The idea of a “training rifle”, a lower power rifle that replicates some of the same functions as the full-strength rifle, was not new and the US armed services actively sought out a new training rifle for this new war. Mossberg answered that call with the Mossberg 44US (sometimes referred to as the M44US), which was a modified version of their Model 44B rifle. This 22lr bolt action rifle features a detachable 7 round magazine, an adjustable rear aperture sight, and a plastic trigger guard. They were in production from 1943-1949.

For sale here is one such M44US. It is in functioning condition and comes with one magazine. The rear sight is still functional. Bluing on the metal parts of this rifle are in great shape with only minor scratches. The stock is in relatively decent shape with some scratches and dings throughout. It features sling swivels for attaching your favorite sling! It was purchased 17 years ago from the CMP.
