It was the main rifle used by the American Expeditionary Forces during WW I. When the U.S. entered the war, it had a need for rifles. The Springfield Armory delivered 843,000 M1903 Springfield rifles, but due to the difficulties in production, rather than re-tool the factories to make the standard U.S. rifle (the M1903 Springfield) it would be much more expediant to adopt the British design. The design was modified for the 30-06 Springfield cartridge to simplify ammunition logistics. The Remington Arms Co. altered the design for .30-06, under the close supervision of the U.S. Army Ordnance Department, which was adopted as the U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, Model of 1917. The Danish Sirius Dog Sled Patrol on Greenland still uses the M1917, which performs reliably in Arctic conditions, as their service weapon. In addition to Remington's production at Ilion, New York, and Eddystone, Pennsylvania, Winchester produced the rifle at their New Haven, Connecticut plant. Eddystone made 1,181,908 rifles Remington produced 545,541 rifles, and Winchester made 465,980 rifles.
For sale here is an M1917 rifle produced at Eddystone. On the reciever there is a stamp reading "U.S. MODEL OF 1917 EDDYSTONE" with serial number reading "1293375". There is an "E" stamped on the rear sight. We believe this rifle was manufactured in late 1918 and was re-arsenaled with a Johnson Automatic Barrel around the WW II era. All parts (metal and wood) appear to be matching Eddystone parts. On the left side of the rifle on the stock there appear to be stamps that appear to read"FSAA", "SAA", and "S". On the left side of the reciever there is a US Army Ordenance symbol stamped, with an "E" stamp as well. Under the rifle on the wood stock there are two "P" stamps and one other stamp we can't make out. There is a "28" stamped under the stock near the butt-plate. On the barrel near the front sight there are stamps reading "J.A" and a US Army Ordenance symbol. There is a stamp reading "075" on the front sight. Metal parts show minor amount of discoloratian, with moderate amount of scratched on the wood. The bore appears to be in good shape!
